Maryland Correction Institution for Women
Audrey sat quietly in the dayroom of the prison, staring at the mounted set near the pillar that displayed an episode of the daytime talk show Maury. The dayroom was thin with female prisoners because most of them were on their assigned job duties for the day earning much less than minimum wage.
She enjoyed the quietness of the room, without some obnoxious bitch hollering, cursing, and screaming at the TV, and having no consideration for those that wanted to listen and actually watch the programs.
Her long auburn braids were freshly done and dangled down to her backside, she had lost ten pounds since her incarceration and a dark blue jumper and gray sandals adorned her.
She sat in the first row of hard plastic chairs that was lined back five rows and six across. She was quiet as a mouse.
Since her uncle’s visit, Audrey’s reputation jumped highly in the prison, nobody fucked with her because they all knew that she was kin to Tooks. At first, when she arrived a little over a year ago, bitches were jealous, and hated on her because of her beauty and long flowing hair. But today, they accepted her, and whatever she needed, it was at her beck and call.
Despite her uncle’s reputation, she was still humble, and wanted nothing more than to be by herself most of the time, and appeal her case, looking for freedom.

She had been pulled over by state troopers two years ago on interstate I-95, and after a complete search of her car, they come up with the drugs. She pleaded guilty in the courts and got served a mandatory fifteen years.
Nia’s boyfriend was no support during her arrest and trial. He left town a month after her arrest and never came back. He didn’t even put down the twenty-five thousand dollar bail that the judge set.
“He dissed me, Audrey. He left me to rot like I wasn’t shit to him,” Nia would cry out to Audrey during the late nights they would talk in their dark cells.
“And now you’re doing fifteen years for him…niggas ain’t shit,” Audrey would say. “I was fuckin’ with this guy named Promise, Nia, he was a cutie…finer than any man I’ve been with. And he was taking care of his daughter, too. I was hooked. We had our thang, but his boys got him into some shit, and he ended up shooting a cop and killing him. So my dumb ass goes on the run with him to V.A, and he talked my ass into robbing banks for him. I swear, Nia,” Audrey had said, as a
